Best Los Feliz Ice Cream Parlor: Jeni’s Ice Cream

When I first stumbled into Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream in the Los Feliz Village on Hillhurst, I thought it was their only shop, not part of a company that operates 33 ice cream scoop shops in 10 cities, distributes prepacked pints to over 3,000 stores across the country, and ships anywhere in the US via their online e-commerce shop and surpasses $30 million in annual revenue.

I mean, the buttery smooth ice cream was just too good to be part of a big chain.  But like many of the shops in the Los Feliz Village, Jeni’s is simply one of the businesses that actually cares about producing a superior product.

Jeni has been making ice creams for two decades, but the Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream started as a company in 2002.  It started with a vision to make ice creams from whole ingredients and dairy from grass fed cows and to skip all of the synthetic flavorings, dyes, emulsifiers and ice cream mixes used by traditional ice cream manufacturers.

Jeni’s is the company that sparked the artisan ice cream movement a decade before it became a food trend.  They have forged direct relationships with vendors to bring the freshest and best ingredients into their ice cream.  Actually, I think they were the first to start using fresh fruit and other fresh ingredients in their ice cream.

You notice it immediately in the taste.  Real ingredients just taste better and they are better for you.  Which is probably why there is such a steady stream of people in and out the door.

The shop in Los Feliz was Jeni’s first West Coast scoop shop.  It’s on the corner of Hillhurst and Clarissa Ave among the other vibrant restaurants, bars, cafes, boutiques and vintage shops.
