The Hollywood Wax Museum

One of the more popular tourist attractions in Hollywood is the Hollywood Wax Museum near the corner of Hollywood Blvd and Highland Ave. It’s a way to see the stars up close and personal that you are otherwise not going to be able to see.

The Hollywood Wax Museum opened in its present location, a historic building that once housed The Embassy Club, on February 6, 1965. The Embassy Club was established in 1930 and open only to 300 top celebrities and entertainment industry executives including: Charlie Chaplin; Mary Pickford; Gloria Swanson; Gone with the Wind producer David O. Selznick; and Jean Harlow.

For more than 45 years the museum has been creating Wax replicas of the biggest Hollywood Celebrities and providing guests the chance to “get close to the stars” and pose for pictures with their favorites.  More contemporary wax figures include Charlie’s Angels, three generations of James Bond, the American Idol judges and other A-list stars.

I had always assumed the Hollywood Was Museum was the first wax museum but I learned wax museums go back to the Middle Ages when was likenesses were made of European royalty for their funeral procedures.  That then grew to be an art form used much like statues in human form where life sized wax figures were created in courts across Europe.

The Hollywood Wax Museum is the most enduring in the United States and it has appeared in dozens of movies and TV shows.  Among them are America’s Top Model, Cursed, House of Wax, See No Evil Hear No Evil and The Mechanic.
