The theater originally opened in 2007 under the Anschutz Entertainment Group with concerts by the Eagles an the Dixie Chicks. In 2015 the theater was re-branded as the Microsoft Theater as part of a naming rights deal with AEG and it now serves as a rather large advertisement for Microsoft.

Since the opening in 2007 the theater has been ho to many entertainment industry award shows, notable the Primetime Emmy Awards The American Music Awards, the ESPY Awards (honoring outstanding athletic achievement), the People’s Choice Awards, the BET Awards, the Game Awards and more.

In 2028 it will host the weightlifting during the Summer Olympics.

Microsoft Square

Microsoft Square is located in front of the theater and centrally located in LA Live directly across from the STAPLES Center. It’s a 40,000 square foot plaza that hosts festivals, community gatherings, and special events. It also boasts 20,000 square feet of LED signage.

During key events, 11th Street, named Chick Hearn Court in the section along the square, is closed to make a larger pedestrian friendly area and location for red carpet arrivals.
