Where to See Christmas Trees & Lighting Ceremonies in Los Angeles
Christmas has arrived in Los Angeles and decorations are starting to pop up all over town. We have updated this post for 2019 to let you know when the actual Christmas tree lighting ceremonies happen in Los Angeles this Christmas Season. Whether or not you can make it to one of the tree lighting ceremonies, you don’t want to let Christmas pass by without taking time to visit one or more of the fabulous Christmas Trees in Los Angeles.
Updated November 11, 2019
Of course most of the Christmas trees to be seen are in major shopping centers, so check the dates in the list below for when the trees go up. In most cases you will be able to do your Black Friday sale shopping at the same time as you do your tree gazing.
The Capitol Records Christmas Tree
The most visible Christmas Tree in Los Angeles is the one on top of the Capitol Records Building just off the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It can be seen from from vantage points all over the city and has become associated with the “cue” that Christmas has arrive in LA.
The Christmas Tree at the Capitol Records Building consists strands of over 4,373 25 watt bulbs hanging from the spindle on top of the building in the shape of a Christmas Tree. It was the first of its kind.
The Christmas Trees at the Pantages Theatre
The Pantages Theatre didn’t settle for just one Christmas tree, they decorated six large evergreen trees and placed them on top of their marquee. Then they completed the decorations with large, lit Christmas wreaths on either side of the building. It’s by far the most impressive Christmas decorations to be seen in Hollywood.
The annual Christmas tree lighting celebration at the Americana Mall is November 14th 2019 from 7:30 to 9:30 PM. This is a magical evening hosted by Ava Michelle with special musical performances. Snow will fall for the first time of the season (and continue until after Christmas) and there will be fireworks and Santa will arrive at the mall to man his workshop.
This is one the kids will love. It’s a free event… other than the money you decide to spend in all the stores while you’re there!

The Grove/Los Angeles
Also one of the tallest trees in Los Angeles, the Grove Christmas tree stands 100 feet. On November 17, 2019 from 7:30 – 9:30 PM the 18th Annual Tree Lighting celebration kicks off the holiday season! There will be performances by Isaac Slade of The Fray, Tori Kelly, The Tenors and Malea Emma.
There will be snow falling, a fireworks display, and Santa will arrive in a big way.
The massive tree is decorated with over 10,000 lights and 15,000 ornaments. Snow falls every night at 7 pm and 8 pm. If this all sounds similar to the Christmas decorations and activities at the Americana, it should. Both shopping malls were developed by the same company.
Again this free event is an awesome place to take the kids!

L.A. County Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony – Downtown LA
The official Los Angeles County Christmas tree is located at the Music Center in Downtown LA. This year the tree will be lit December 2, 2019 – so you still have time to be a part of this great event. This beautiful tree, which you can see lit for most of the Holiday season will be ushered in by music and fanfare. Note: Grand Park and the Music Center tend to be referred to interchangably. Last year the Christmas tree was directly west of the Arthur J. Will Memorial Fountain at Grand Park. This is on the west end just across Grand from the Music Center. Either way you’ll be in the right place.
Note, there is a second tree at Grand Park on the east end across from City Hall, though I’m not aware of any lighting ceremony at that one.

The BOLD Holidays Kick-Off with Rodeo Drive Holiday Lighting Celebration in Beverly Hills is November 14th, 2019 from 5:00 – 10:00 PM. This fabulous holiday lighting celebration will be at 248 Rodeo Drive, about where Rodeo Drive and Via Rodeo intersect.
Beverly Hills always goes all out for Christmas. Nearly 150,000 lights will be lit along Rodeo drive. Along the median you will find full size Baccarat chandeliers, lighted birch trees and palm trees, plus vibrant poinsettias. You will also find wonderful displays at The Beverly Wilshire (AKA, The Pretty Woman hotel) and The Four Seasons.
3rd Street Promenade/Santa Monica
Santa Monica has an amazing tree in the Center Court of the shopping area of 3rd Street promenade. The whole outdoor shopping area will be beautifully decorated. The lighting ceremony happens on .

Manhattan Beach Pier
The 30th Annual Pier Lighting and 25th Annual Holiday Open House on Wed November 20th 2019 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. The switch to light the pier lights will be thrown at 7:00 PM. Manhattan Beach will also have decorated living trees on the pier although it is not clear if they will be in place for the pier lighting ceremony. The Roundhouse Marine Studies Lab and Aquarium building at the end of the pier is adorned with strings of lights in the shape of a Christmas tree.
As with the Christmas tree at Manhattan Beach, the Holiday tree at FIGat7th isn’t an evergreen tree. It is however a beautiful work of art you can enjoy while shopping for bargains at this DTLA shopping mall.
Pershing Square Christmas Tree
One of the taller and more elaborate Christmas trees to be found in downtown Los Angeles will be at Pershing Square, 532 South Olive Street Los Angeles. We can’t find a date for a tree lighting ceremony but count on it being there by about Thanksgiving. Of course there is also the traditional Ice Skating at Pershing Square that begins November 14, 2019!
Union Station Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony
Union Station puts together a spectacular Christmas kickoff on Thursday, Nov. 21, 2109 at 6:30 PM. The Annual Tree Lighting under the stars should start at about 7:15 on the South Patio complete with snowfall. Expect performances from Grand Arts Chamber Singers, The Beverly Belles and the Toy Soldiers Drumline.
The event is a children’s delight. There will be Santa selfies and Union Station’s Candy Cane Lane. This also marks the start of Union Stations free holiday concerts that will occur on Nov 21st, Dec 6th, 7th, 13th and 20th.

Culver City Christmas Tree Lighting Sled-tacular
Culver City goes green this holiday season by using energy efficient LED lights to light the 22 foot pine tree with 7500 lights! Santa Clause decides to escape the cold of the North Pole and makes a trip to sunny Southern California, Culver City to be exact, to soak up some California sunshine and spread Christmas Cheer. There will be hot cider, hot cocoa, cookies and other treats provided free of charge by area businesses.
The fun happens December 5th 2019 5:00pm-8:00pm at Town Plaza (intersection of Culver Blvd and Van Buren Pl.). Free one hour parking is available at any of the city’s parking structures.
Venice Holiday Sign Lighting
What Venice lacks in terms of a massive evergreen Christmas Tree, it makes up for by the celebration they put on for the the Annual Venice Sign Holiday Lighting Ceremony. There will be live music and plenty of festivities in the way only Venice can roll them out! Best, you’re right there on the funky Venice Boardwalk so there’s zero chance of getting bored. I don’t know that I’d put this one on the top of the list for young children, but teens and above will love it.
The fun happens December 7th 2019 from 6:15 to 9 pm. Sign lighting is at 8 PM. The location is Windward Plaza at the Venice Sign, Windward and Pacific Avenues.
